Ten simple rules for reporting voxel-based morphometry studies
Voxel-based morphometry [Ashburner, J. and Friston, K.J., 2000. Voxel-based morphometry—the methods. NeuroImage 11(6 Pt 1), 805–821] is a commonly used tool for studying patterns of brain change in development or disease and neuroanatomical correlates of subject characteristics. In performing a VBM study, many methodological options are available; if the study is to be easily interpretable and repeatable, the processing steps and decisions must be clearly described. Similarly, unusual methods and parameter choices should be justified in order to aid readers in judging the importance of such options or in comparing the work with other studies. This editorial suggests core principles that should be followed and information that should be included when reporting a VBM study in order to make it transparent, replicable and useful

The project asked about policies to support work-family reconciliation among low-waged women in England. How are low-waged women constrained in their choices by limited and fragmentary social policies? We identified innovative social policies available in the international arena around parental leave, child-care, and time that could promote work-family reconciliation, more continuous employment and better quality jobs among low-waged women in England. Would these policies be attractive and better meet their needs in reconciling paid work and family

Molecular nexopathies: a new paradigm of neurodegenerative disease.
Neural networks provide candidate substrates for the spread of proteinopathies causing neurodegeneration, and emerging data suggest that macroscopic signatures of network disintegration differentiate diseases. However, how do protein abnormalities produce network signatures? The answer may lie with 'molecular nexopathies': specific, coherent conjunctions of pathogenic protein and intrinsic network characteristics that define network signatures of neurodegenerative pathologies. Key features of the paradigm that we propose here include differential intrinsic network vulnerability to propagating protein abnormalities, in part reflecting developmental structural and functional factors; differential vulnerability of neural connection types (e.g., clustered versus distributed connections) to particular pathogenic proteins; and differential impact of molecular effects (e.g., toxic-gain-of-function versus loss-of-function) on gradients of network damage. The paradigm has implications for understanding and predicting neurodegenerative disease biology
Balanced sensitivity and specificity on unbalanced data using support vector machine re-thresholding
Support vector machine (SVM) classifiers use multivariate patterns to separate two groups by a hyperplane with maximal margin. This strategy tends to obtain good generalisation accuracy on even very high dimensional applications. However, SVMs are not well suited to unbalanced data with very different numbers of cases in each group. In this work we implement a properly cross-validated method for altering the SVM threshold (also known as the bias or cut-point) to re-balance the sensitivity and specificity
New search strategy for high z intervening absorbers: GRB021004, a pilot study
We present near-infrared narrow- and broad-band imaging of the field of
GRB021004, performed with ISAAC on the UT1 of the ESO Very Large Telescope. The
narrow-band filters were chosen to match prominent emission lines at the
redshift of the absorption-line systems found against the early-time afterglow
of GRB021004: [OIII] at z=1.38 and Halpha at z=1.60, respectively. For the
z=1.38 system we find an emission-line source at an impact parameter of 16",
which is somewhat larger than the typical impact parameters of a sample of MgII
absorbers at redshifts around unity. Assuming that this tentative
redshift-identification is correct, the star formation rate of the galaxy is 13
+- 2 Msun/year. Our study reaches star-formation rate limits (5 sigma) of 5.7
Msun/year at z=1.38, and 7.7 Msun/year at z=1.60. These limits correspond to a
depth of roughly 0.13 L*. Any galaxy counterpart of the absorbers nearer to the
line of sight either has to be fainter than this limit or not be an
